Intraoral Oxygen Therapy
Relief of generalised dental sensitivity.
The splints are connected through tubes to an oxygen concentrator machine (in our case the Intraceuticals). We work with an oxygen flow of 4 – 5 litres per minute. Inside the splints an atmosphere of pure oxygen is created under light pressure, which penetrates the interdental spaces and gums, producing a strong surface oxygenation. Oxygen is essential for cell metabolism. This technique improves the supply and absorption of oxygen in the gums (hyperoxygenation) as well as having a strong antimicrobial activity.
The bacteria that cause gingivitis and later periodontitis (common pyorrhoea) are mostly anaerobic (predominantly gram-negative anaerobic bacilli), i.e. they do not survive in the presence of oxygen. Periodic exposure to oxygen facilitates the destruction and elimination of the bacteria causing periodontal disease.
Prior to oxygen application, tartar is removed and periodontal pockets are scaled and root planed.
The patient is recommended to use at home for one week a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide 10 Vol. for oral use and one part normal water to rinse the mouth 3-4 times a day for 1 minute. Then rinse with normal water.
After the first periodontal treatment (scaling and smoothing), one session per week with the oxygen splints is recommended. Please contact us.
Recommended for the relief of pregnancy gingivitis as it is completely harmless to the foetus.
Relief of generalised dental sensitivity.
We connect an endodontic irrigation cannula or needle to the oxygen concentrator machine via a tube and apply the oxygen jet into the pockets or root canals for 1-2 minutes. We work with an oxygen flow of 1.5 – 2 litres per minute of oxygen. We apply carefully without squeezing the needle into the pocket or canal so as not to create an overpressure of oxygen.
